Friday at the Astoria Coffee House

Friends - This a quick and shameless self promotion. I'll be playing at the Astoria Coffee House this Friday, May 25, from 8 pm until 11 pm, along with the charming and talented Brigado Eduardo and Peter Unander. This is a fun venue to showcase our original songs, including some never before performed in public. We hope to see you there! - Peter Huhtala

PS - If you'd like to hear or download some of my recent recordings, I have a few uploaded to http://www.myspace.com/peterhuhtala

Down the road I plan to write about my experiences as a songwriter and performer. I know that there are many musicians that read this blog, so perhaps we'll draw out some interesting anecdotes. Heck, let's start now. How about sharing your brushes with musical greatness? Who shook Zappa's hand? Who ate breakfast with John Lee Hooker? Who did you happen upon, jam with, open for, work for in the backup band? The lines are open.

Working at a music store you meet all manner of musicians. The goth punks, the new in town classically trained vocalist looking for other of her caliber, good luck in Sandpoint a town of 6000. Like Astoria, it's a quaint drinking village with a fishing problem. Some cool older pickers stop in like Tom Newbill, a really nice chap who used to work for Fender in the late 60's in fact he was Jimi Hendrix's tech at the Newport Pop festival in '67, got hit with Jimi's guitar. He was hurtin' for certain behind the curtain. I could listen to Tom play blues all day long. Then there's Doug Bond, a red hot bluegrass picker who always stops in to see whats new. Keb Mo came in while he was in town to play the summer music festival. I got a autographed CD out of the deal and he almost bought an old viola but was worried about shipping it. The one hit wonders The Elegants (Where Are You Little Star?) came in for the big lost in the 50's weekend here. They were really fun and bought a bunch of stuff. They put on a killer show that night too. Shirley Owens of Shirelles signed an album for me last year. Another great show.
Gotta say though probably the most fun I've had with a guitar is around a campfire. First learning to play on an old Stella at Mt. St. Helens spirit lake YMCA camp. Then a few years later at the chittem camp out off Labiski road. That was essentially the birth of Mother Hubbards Wonderland Band of which you were a member for a time. then there was that magical evening at the Hippy fair in Veneta when I suddenly found myself around a fire with Ramblin' Jack Elliot and a couple of the Holy Modal Rounders. Finally there was that night of your reception out in Lewis&Clark around the fire singing every song we could think of and then some. That was all right. Have a great gig Peter I will be there in spirit.

Oh crap! that should be Monterey Pop Festival not Newport. Tom was in charge of keeping Jimi's strat in tip top playing condition, and then J lights it on fire, smashes it to bits and smacks him with part of it (unintentionally) through the curtain. Tom didn't take it personally, just wishes he would have had the foresight to pick up the pieces and save them.
Guy have you started kicking yourself for not buying that bass and having Les sign it yet?

It was a fun show. The first set we did the "coffeeshop" folk routine & an, uh, aging audience clapped after every song. The rest of the evening was a little rowdier. Unander spun some excellent bass solos and Brigado was inspiring on persussion. I was relaxed and pretty happy with the 350 watt Carvin LM 15A powered speaker we used as a PA, but we should have brought the other one to use as a wedge monitor, even in the relatively small space. We did a few Unander songs, and the harmonies between Peter and me worked better than ever (We practiced.) I also am confident now that I have enough original material of my own to fill three hours. We'll be looking to perform some more this summer.

Practice?

I'd be afraid BFBB would fail miserably if we practiced.

Thank God Unander plays with us when he is available.

But, yeah, the press was great from numerous people.

You got a CD yet?

Let me know when you do.
